Known as Martha Hill. First wife of Christian Q. Johnson. Born at Avaldnes, Norway, County Rogaland. Per James E Shlosser records, she is recorded in "Avaldsnes II page 178-9, #16, Various Places in Kallevik" translated from the original Norwegian text.
Anna Marta,born 1841, married 1870 to Kristian Johannessen Kvalavag in Haugesund, to US in 1872. Parents were Johannes Anderssen, born 1811, died 1856, son of Anders and Anna of Helgeland, Johannes married Marta Helene Olsdtr, born 1814, daughter of Ola and Gunnhild of Kallevid farm number 3."
The file on Carrie Johnson, her daughter, says her mother died in childbirth. This could have been after the birth of John, Carries brother, in April 1877,but I believe it was later, probably between 1880 and 1882. Christian married Serina Oct 31, 1883, so Martha must have died before then. We need to look for death certificate or obituary information in LaSalle and DeKalb counties, because it appears that Christian and Martha lived in LaSalle County when the 1880 census was taken. It appears that Christian lived in Sandwich from the early 1880's. Charles F Dirst reviewed old newspaper microfiche at the Ill State Historic al Library in Springfield on Oct 24, 1996. In the Sandwich Argus May 26, 1883 was the following: Sheridan Column -- Died - Mrs Chris R. Johnson Friday of last week leaving an infant baby. The father and children have the sympathy of the entire community. (I doubt that this is Martha, but could be.)
